Reasons to Be Thankful !

Happy Thanksgiving,

The holiday season is again upon us. There are many reasons for all of the Yelle Elementary School family to be thankful this season. We have once again come together to support members of our community. Last week we had a Hat Day to help raise funds to support one of our families who suffered through a recent house fire. The Yelle school community raised over $400.00 which was donated to the family, so that they may start to replace some of their personal belongings.

The Helping Hands group also donated many cases of can goods which will be delivered to the Norton Food Pantry. This group of 4th and 5th graders give of their time after school to help the community. During the holiday season they will continue their giving by creating over 40 gift baskets to donate to a local nursing home.

In closing I would like to say that I am very thankful to be working with such a caring and wonderful group of students, staff and parent group. I hope that each of you enjoys the Holiday Season!

Falling into October

Greetings,

The days have finally begun to cool down and the leaves are falling off the trees, these are all signs of Autumn in New England. The Yelle signs of Autumn are all around also, we have students doing challenging math problems, such as making combinations. In reading we are dicussing great stories and beginning to create our own personal narratives. If you happen to see Mrs. Haglund walking about you may notice she has an interesting name tag each day. Mrs. Almeida's class is busy discussing and playing parts of the solar system - what is rotation?

Please remember on Oct. 13th we are having a Relay for Yelle Day. This is our only fundraiser for the year, so please support a walker and our school!
Have a great week and we will check back in next week.

First Week of School

Hello Fellow Yellians,

The first week of school went very well. On Tuesday, Sept. 7th we had our Open House which was very well attended by many 4th and 5th graders. We were all very excited as we came through the doors on the 8th of September. There was an all school assembly to welcome all the staff and students to the Yelle. I have seen many great activities going on in the classrooms, one such activity was discussing osmosis and seeing how water can alter gummi bear shapes. Have a great weekend, remember Picture Day is Sept. 21st.

March - Spring is Almost Here

Hello Yellians,

It is the first week in March and the sun is definately trying to come back again. Last week we had a great time raising money for the "It Takes A Community" fund. The basketball game was on Friday Night and we were happy to share that we raised over $400.00 to donate to the cause. We had another P.J event, where bracets were also sold. We at The Yelle are also now the proud owners of a new School Store, this amazing stand was built by Mr. Winiarz. Thank you Mr. Winiarz, it makes our front lobby look wonderful.
Both grades 4 and 5 are preparing to take the ELA MCAS beginning in march, the full schedule is posted on our web page. Please check out the dates and make sure everyone is well rested, well fed and confident. The students have been working very hard on their open responses and paragraph writing skills.
Have a great week.

Winter Keeps us Busy

Hello Fellow Yellians,

There is only one more week until vacation, we have been so busy that it is hard to believe that soon spring will be upon us. Since the last posting we have had many interesting activities happen here at Yelle. Last week we had a Pajama Day, where beads were sold by parent volunteers to the students. We also had 5 girls who made bracelets and sold them to the students. I am very proud to say that with everyone working so closely and giving generously we raised $1400.00. The money was given to The Red Cross for the Haitian Relief Fund. We have also been collecting shoes to send over to Haiti, this support effort is being offered throughout the district. The program is called Soles for Souls. If you would like to drop off shoes to the Yelle we will make sure they get to the right location.

To continue with the spirit of giving I would like to also report that Mrs. Garzaro and Miss Orzsak's classes made blankets to donate to The Big Brother Organization. They did a great job, they had several parent and grandparent friends help them with this project.
MCAS Academy started this week, we have forty 4th and 5th graders participating in this afterschool program. The students are working on skills in both ELA and Math through a variety of different activities.
The PTO is kicking off a new fundraiser this week, Relay for Yelle. The students are collecting donations to support the school, the donations are pledges to each student. The students will receive the money if the student completes a set number of laps around the gym. I wish everyone luck as you begin this activity. I will report back the results next week.

Have a great week,

Week of Jan.18th, 2010

Hello To All Yellians,

This week was a short week here at school, with Monday being a holiday we had only 4 days to fit in 5 days of work. The students and staff are all very concerned about the people of Haiti, we want to help all of them. We decided as a school that we would have a P.J. day and raise money to send to The Red Cross for the Haiti Relief Fund. On Tuesday, Jan.26th we will be having our P.J day with breakfast for lunch. We will also sell beads, all of the proceeds will go to the Red Cross. Our Helping Hands group met on Thursday and they are also trying to help The victims of the Earth Quake. The students in this afterschool group made posters advertising our P.J. Day and posters for the Soles for Souls project that the district is participating in this month. A few of the students wrote letters to the volunteers who are helping over in Haiti, we want them to know we appreciate all that they are doing.
On Friday the PTO presented a Laser Show for the students, it was amazing to see and hear a show that involved all of the students and staff. Friday evening there was a second Laser Show and Pizza Dinner hosted by the PTO. Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who made these events possible.
We are getting closer to March that means spring and MCAS are right around the corner. Please remember to have the students do their MCAS ELA homework packets and explain to you how they got the answers. You will be impressed with the skills that we have been learning and sharpening to become strong readers.
Have a wonderful weekend, we will talk again next week.
